PT Faculty Participates in Service Trip to El Salvador

PT faculty member Amy Foley joined eight other medical personnel from Visitation Parish (Kansas City, MO) on a volunteer trip to San Salvador, El Salvador during the week of October 2 - 9, 2010. The group included physicians and nurse practitioners in addition to physical therapists. They worked for the week within the community of Madre De Los Pobles, Visitation's sister parish in San Salvador.

The volunteers coordinated a health week and were able to treat and educate nearly 250 people from the area The delegation went at a time when the Catholic Church in El Salvador had asked the authorities to step up their fight against a spate of violent murders in the country.

PT Student Helps RU Volleyball Coach Join 1,000-Victory Club

As if the first year of the physical therapy curriculum weren't challenging enough, PT student Emily Levy (PT '13) is moonlighting this fall as a member of the Rockhurst University volleyball team. On September 3, 2010, Emily and her teammates joined forces to help their coach reach a lofty milestone.

The volleyball team opened the 2010 season with a 3-0 victory over Tiffin (Ohio) in the opening game of Rockhurst Classic tournament. With the win, Rockhurst volleyball coach Tracy Rietzke became the newest member of the 1,000-victory club. He is the sixth coach in NCAA history to collect 1,000 or more victories in women’s volleyball.

A native of Kensington, Kan., Rietzke has won 829 matches in 22 seasons at Rockhurst after compiling 172 wins in six seasons at Kansas Wesleyan (1982-88). He's the sixth coach in NCAA history to post 1,000 or more victories in women’s volleyball and he leads all active NCAA Division II coaches in victories.

As a red-shirt senior, Emily plays middle hitter for the volleyball team. She and teammate Maggie McGovern combined for 24 kills and eight blocks to lead the Hawks to their season opening win. Emily and Maggie were named to the All-Tournament team along with Rockhurst senior Alyssa Emerson.

Congratulations to Emily, Coach Rietzke and the team! Just goes to show that you never know where you'll find Rockhurst PT students making a significant contribution in the community. :-)

Clinical Educators Course Set for November 2nd

"The Fieldwork Educator’s Toolbox: A Course for Clinical Educators" will be held Tuesday, November 2, 2010 from 6:00-8:30 p.m. on the Rockhurst campus in Science Center Room 115.

This short course is targeted at Clinical Educators/Supervisors who are interested in planning and implementing an effective  student learning experience.

Ann Marie Decker, PT, MSA, GCS, (Physical Therapy), Beverly Leachman, MS, CCC, SLP (Communication Sciences and Disorders) and Liz Zayat, MS, OTR/L (Occupational Therapy) have teamed up to present this great event.

Please plan to join us on November 2nd for a relaxed evening of education and networking with local OT, PT, & ST practitioners.

This program is offered at no cost to participants employed at facilities with current fieldwork agreements
with Rockhurst University. There is a registration fee of $20 for participants not affiliated with current fieldwork
sites.
